Exploring the Cities with the Highest Weed Consumption in the World

In this article, we delve into the fascinating realm of cannabis consumption across the globe, spotlighting the 20 cities known for their high levels of weed usage. If you’re keen on understanding global trends in the cannabis industry—from legalization movements to the introduction of innovative cannabis-infused beverages—you can skip directly to the detailed list of cities.

    A Historical Perspective on Cannabis

The medicinal properties of cannabis have been celebrated for thousands of years. The earliest documented use dates back to 2,800 B.C. in China, as chronicled in Emperor Shen Nung’s pharmacopeia. In Hinduism, cannabis is regarded as one of the five sacred plants, believed to purify sins and facilitate a connection with the divine. It is equally integral to Ayurvedic medicine, showcasing its longstanding significance in healing practices.

The Explosion of the Global Cannabis Market

According to Fortune Business Insights, the global cannabis market was valued at an impressive $47.32 billion in 2022, with projections suggesting it will skyrocket to $444.34 billion by 2030—growing at a remarkable CAGR of 34%. This explosive growth is fueled predominantly by a shift in attitudes toward medical and recreational cannabis usage.

Global Legalization Trends: A Focus on Thailand

In June 2022, Thailand made history by becoming the first Asian nation to decriminalize the cultivation and consumption of cannabis. The Thai government now aims to commercialize cannabis as a profitable cash crop, anticipating a national cannabis industry worth over $2 billion. This move not only aims at economic benefits but also strives to alleviate rural poverty and reduce overcrowding in prisons, where a significant number of inmates are incarcerated for drug-related offenses.

California: The Cannabis Capital Facing Challenges

With legal sales totaling $5.3 billion in 2022, California stands as the largest cannabis market in the world. However, the industry faces mounting challenges. A recent report cited over $600 million in collective debt, with new tax laws potentially exacerbating the situation. As a consequence, many pot shops are struggling financially, leading to fears of an impending extinction event for cannabis retailers in the state.

    The Rise of Cannabis-Infused Beverages

One of the most intriguing developments in the cannabis sector is the emergence of cannabis-infused drinks. Major corporations, including Constellation Brands and Anheuser-Busch, are eager to stake their claim in this rapidly evolving market. However, initial attempts have met with mixed results, highlighting the volatility and complexity of integrating cannabis into traditional beverage sectors.

Peak Consumption: The Cities Leading the Way

To compile our list, we utilized the 2023 Cannabis Price Index from CFAH, focusing exclusively on cities with populations exceeding 200,000. When cities displayed similar consumption levels, we ranked them based on the price per gram of weed.

    Notable Cities and Their Consumption

    • Denver, USA: Despite a reported 22% decrease in sales from 2021 to 2022, Denver remains a key player, consuming 6.8 metric tons of weed.

    • South Australia: Known for its high methamphetamine use, cannabis is still a controversial topic there, with 7.1 metric tons consumed.

    • Ireland: A restrictive market for cannabis, yet about 7.9 metric tons are consumed annually, showcasing a high percentage of users.

    • British Columbia, Canada: Once a hub for cannabis businesses, BC consumes 7.9 metric tons, reflecting a robust cannabis culture.

    • Philadelphia, USA: Having decriminalized small amounts of cannabis in 2014, the city sees consumption of 10.6 metric tons.

    • Quebec, Canada: With an uptick in legal sales post-legalization, Quebec recorded 11 metric tons of consumption.

    • Phoenix, USA: Progressive cannabis banking regulations aid Phoenix, which consumes 12.9 metric tons annually.

    • Germany: Set for regulatory changes, Germany’s consumption is projected at 15 metric tons.

    • Austria: Ranking 10th, Vienna’s consumption reached 15.5 metric tons, demonstrating a growing acceptance of cannabis.

    • Houston, USA: Legal initiatives are underway; meanwhile, the city consumed 18.5 metric tons in recent years.

This overview provides a detailed snapshot of cannabis consumption in various urban environments, highlighting the shifting landscape of weed use globally. As attitudes continue to evolve and markets develop, these cities will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of cannabis culture and commerce.
