Cannabis Business Asia Conference: A Groundbreaking Dialogue on Medical Cannabis

World-class business leaders gathered in Bangkok for the Cannabis Business Asia Conference, a significant event focusing on the evolving landscape of medical cannabis. Held on February 29 to March 1, this marks the 3rd Annual Conference and is recognized as a pivotal forum for the development of the Asian medical cannabis and hemp market.

    The Context of the Conference

This year’s conference provided a critical platform for stakeholders interested in the burgeoning cannabis sector in Asia, particularly Thailand. Don Land, the administrator and executive chairman of the Thai Cannabis Corporation, emphasized the importance of the event by stating, “Cannabis Business Asia was the right platform at the right time to inform those wanting to do cannabis-related business in Thailand.” He referenced King Bhumibol’s National Plan, which is grounded in the concept of sustainability. This strategic vision sets a context for the integration of cannabis into Thailand’s economy and healthcare.

Keynote and Insights from Industry Leaders

The event was moderated by Dr. Richard Nixon Gomez, a respected scientist and chairman of Bauertek Corporation in the Philippines. Notably, Bauertek stands out as the country’s leading manufacturer of food supplements, adhering to high manufacturing standards through collaborations with governmental and academic institutions. Dr. Gomez highlighted the current legal status of cannabis in the Philippines, where it remains illegal but is gaining traction in legislative conversations. The proposed bill seeks to create the Philippine Medical Cannabis Authority (PMCA) under the Department of Health, aimed at regulating and facilitating the use of medical cannabis.

    Legislative Progress and Challenges

Dr. Gomez’s presentation drew attention to the ongoing debates surrounding medical cannabis legislation in the Philippines. With 13 senators backing the proposed bill, there is cautious optimism that legalization could occur soon. The proposed regulations delineate strict guidelines for cultivation, including restrictions on proximity to schools and residential areas, ensuring that any future industry operates within a responsible framework.

    Real-Life Impact: Personal Stories

Frank Minitello, founder and COO of FYR Genetics in Thailand, shared a heartfelt account of how cannabis positively affected his life. His perspective underscores the therapeutic benefits of cannabis, particularly for conditions like back pain and anxiety. Minitello’s story reflects a growing recognition of cannabis as a viable alternative for sufferers of various ailments, enhancing the public narrative surrounding this multifaceted plant.

    Global Trends in Cannabis Usage

Luke Johnson, president and CEO of NuNature Labs, provided insight into the global cannabis market’s expansion. He revealed that cannabis consumption breaks down into 46% recreational, 28% therapeutic, and 26% medical usage, illustrating the diverse functionalities the plant serves across different demographics. This data indicates a robust market potential for industries geared toward cannabis products, both medicinal and recreational.

    Innovations in Cannabis Products

From Michael Sassano, CEO of Somai Pharmaceuticals, attendees learned about the European landscape, specifically Portugal’s established recreational market. Somai boasts a catalog of 86 cannabis products, with plans to introduce more in the coming quarters. As the cannabis sector matures, the importance of innovation and product diversity becomes paramount for manufacturers.

    Understanding Regulatory Frameworks

Dr. Atthachai Homhuan, director of Regulatory Affairs with Tilleke & Gibbins, shed light on the regulatory mechanisms governing cannabis in Thailand. The country lifted cannabis from the list of narcotics in 2019, signaling a shift in perception and opening new avenues for research and commercial opportunities. This legal evolution is essential for fostering a safe environment where cannabis can be cultivated, consumed, and studied.

    Branding and Market Positioning

David Paleschuck, a consultant from the Branding Bud Consulting Group, emphasized the significance of crafting a strong cannabis brand. He articulated, “A brand is really a promise and its ability to deliver on that promise consistently.” This perspective highlights the competitive nature of the cannabis market, where differentiating brands could significantly impact consumer choice and loyalty.

    Global Perspectives on Cannabis

Various speakers from diverse backgrounds contributed to the dialogue around cannabis, including Lisa Varley from Australia and Jordan Herring from Thailand, each discussing unique challenges and opportunities in their respective regions. For instance, Varley focused on the transforming landscape of medicinal cannabis in Australia, while Herring emphasized the critical role of genetics in fostering quality cannabis strains.

    Engaging with Stakeholders

The conference attracted participants eager to comprehend market dynamics, competitive landscapes, and potential opportunities within the cannabis sector. Networking and knowledge-sharing among attendees were encouraged, enabling entrepreneurs and investors to develop informed strategies for engaging in this rapidly expanding industry.

As the event showcased the convergence of medical, regulatory, and business aspects, it prompted stimulating discussions that aimed to propel the Asian cannabis market forward, fostering a spirit of collaboration and innovation among its diverse stakeholders.
